Dual Purpose Wildflower Seeds LWXP 100%

Dual Purpose combines a feast of annual and perennial wildflowers for both 'instant' colour and a long-lasting meadow. Five bold cornfield annuals species, including cornflower and poppy, will bloom beautifully in the first year while the perennial plants develop. From year two, these stunning, long-lasting species will flower for years to come, creating a permanent wildflower area.

Not only does the Dual Purpose mix provide a practical solution for areas where speed of flowering and a long-lasting meadow are both important, it's a treat for bees and butterflies too - stuffed full of flowers recommended by the RHS as ‘Perfect for Pollinators’.

  • 'Instant' colour from bold and bright cornfield annuals
  • Stunning perennials begin to flower in the second year to create a long-lasting meadow
  • The large percentage of annual wildflowers make it ideal for situations where first year colour is important
  • Contains 27 different native wildflower species.
  • Sowing Rate: 3 grams per sq/m - 1kg covers 330sq/m

Sowing Instructions

How to sow wildlflower seeds

  • Remove all weeds and debris.
  • If the area has been overtaken by weeds, it is important to reduce the number of weeds in the soil.
  • It may be necessary to allow time for the first flush of weeds to germinate and then remove them before attempting to sow wildflowers.
  • Wildflowers prefer poor soil with low nutrients and if it is practical to do so you could remove any good quality topsoil.
  • Prepare the soil to a fine tilth.
  • Try not to disturb the soil any further as this may bring more weed seeds to the surface.
  • Most wildflower seeds are best sown February to April and late August to October, with the ideal time being autumn. Avoid hot summer months.
  • It is advisable to mix the wildflower seed with a carrier (dry sand) to assist with sowing. This will help in distributing the seed evenly over a large area.
  • Sow pure wildflower mixtures (100%) at a rate of 3g/m2
  • Sow wildflower with grass mixtures at 5 g/m2
  • It should not be necessary to rake the seed over as the light helps germination on many species.

A few weeks after sowing, the seeds will begin to germinate. If you are using a wildflower seed mixture the growth of the different flowers (and grasses if you have them in the mix) will vary, so if grasses start to emerge first there's no need to worry.

  • Annuals will flower the same year if sown during the spring or the previous autumn.
  • Perennial wildflower species will establish during the first year of sowing and flower during the second year.
